What is the screening and benchmarking tool?

August 29, 2024 5 min read

In today’s ever evolving landscape, our customers need access to extensive data, actionable insights, and robust analytics to navigate uncertainty and unlock opportunity.

Moody’s is uniquely positioned to gather and publish high-quality data focusing on the credit quality of entities. These insights provide the foundation of Moody’s CreditView, a powerful integrated solution that helps you navigate credit risk, and the analytical tools that we offer within.

What is Screening & Benchmarking?

Available to CreditView subscribers, the Screening & Benchmarking analytical tool provides an interface where credit analysts, rating advisors, portfolio managers, among others, are able to build lists of entities and interact with ratings, financials, and ESG scores across sectors – all in one place.

With data on over 50,000 rated, public and private entities across sectors, the Screening & Benchmarking tool is designed to help you with your decision making across different stages of your analysis – from screening and idea generation to in-depth fundamental credit analysis.

Screening

Narrow down to a list of entities that matches your requirements by applying a variety of filters and criteria. This can help you develop strong quantitative knowledge of your sector and generate origination and investment ideas.

In this example, we are looking for a list of spec-grade Automotive companies with a EBITA Margin % between 7-10% resulting in 6 entities.

Comparing peers

With all the data points available, the Screening & Benchmarking tool is an effective place conduct peer comparisons and benchmark to medians to identify relative strengths and weaknesses of an entity from a quantitative perspective.

In this example, we have a list of 5 entities in the North American Pharmaceutical sector all rated between Baa2 and Ba2. We can now compare their key indicators with each other as well as the list median for further benchmarking.

Determining ESG impact

Our proprietary Credit Impact Scores assess the impact of ESG factors on an entity’s overall rating. It includes consideration such as Environmental, Social, and Governance each of which have their own score that breaks down the Credit Impact Score. Users can read Analyst Commentaries on each of the scores giving them invaluable insights.

In this example, we are looking at a list of Corporate entities globally rank ordered by descending Credit Impact Score with CIS-5 having the greatest negative impact on overall rating.

Assessing companies without a Moody’s Rating

We have recently added data on 12,000+ private and public corporate entities who do not have an active public rating from Moody’s Ratings. The financials are standardized to Moody’s Ratings Chart of Accounts making this new, larger universe easy to compare against rated peers.

In this example, we are seeing a list of over 4,100 entities in the Services sector that we offer financials on of which over 2,600 do not have an active public rating by Moody’s Ratings.

The Screening & Benchmarking tool is a core functionality that is a part of CreditView. Learn more about our CreditView platform by reading our What is Creditview? post.
